The Hubble eXtreme Deep Field image was released on September 25, 2012. It is the deepest optical view of space that currently exists, showing galaxies from 13.2 billion years in the past.
To put this into some kind of perspective, each dot of light in this image is a galaxy. Some are closer than others – you’ll be able to see spiral galaxies and bar galaxies. But each one of them contains literally billions of stars. And billions of planets. There must be trillions upon trillions of planets in this image alone. And this image is only one small section of the night sky. It is only 2.3 arcminutes to an edge. Hold your hand up to the night sky and the area in this image is smaller than your fingernail. And yet it captures the sheer infinitude of the Universe.
